“So, I would like to replace the head in front of the NSK S-Max m95l today because that’s the handpiece they use here. Since the head is relatively easy to replace, we have decided to do so.
The collet (usually named rotor or cartridge) is what frequently malfunctions for us, and we want to replace it today, the entire head. In order to keep the handpiece in function, the heads can be relatively easily ordered online here
You need a small watchmaker screwdriver and two keys. There is also a special key for the head from NSK, which can also be ordered online, although it is not necessarily needed. The whole process will likely take about five minutes.
Start from the back. At the bottom, there is a very small screw that needs to be removed. This is often quite tight, and you need a bit of force and pressure to get started. After that, it’s actually quite easy.
This threaded screw holds the head in the handpiece. It’s relatively small, and as I mentioned, you need to be a bit careful not to damage it when loosening.
Once it’s loosened, you can pull out the entire head. We need this part now. There are two seals at the top that you need to occasionally replace, and you can order these online. Now, you can loosen the cap at the back. This is now going quite smoothly. Simply unscrew it.
Now, we still need to loosen this shaft. For this, you need a key. I’ve ground this one a bit narrower so that it fits in between and can be used to fix it. Then, I use the key to turn it carefully in the head, and then you can unscrew the head.
Now, the head is still stuck in here, but you can easily push it out and discard it with a screwdriver from the back.
You need to orient it correctly; there is a hole where the shaft goes in. At the front, you can see the water outlet nozzles. Push it forward, sometimes it clicks a bit; then it’s flush. Put the back cover on again.
Screw in the shaft; this is also tightened.
Very gently, put the head back without damaging the O-rings here.
Actually, you often don’t have to replace them, but if you do, it’s probably because you’ve damaged them during this step.
And then, we’re almost done.
Here we finished without big efforts!
P.S. The Manufacture NSK Recommends for High Speed Handpieces to replace both parts like Rotor/ Cartridge and Intermediate shaft. This is because its a mechanical handpiece and both parts are rotating at high speed and have big load pressure and are consuming simultaneous, but every technical or dentists decide for himself depending on situations.
If you hear noise, vibration or burs are not rotating smoothly than you need to inspect intermediate shafts gears ( with loupe to see if they are consumed, erased) in this case you need to replace also intermediate shaft too.

How to Replace the Head of NSK S-Max M95L: A Step-by-Step Guide
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process of replacing the head of the NSK S-Max M95L, specifically focusing on the angle piece and chuck. The decision to replace the head is driven by its relative ease of replacement and the frequent malfunctioning of the chuck.
Tools Required:
- Small watchmaker screwdriver
- Two wrenches
- Optional: Special key for the head, available online
Replacement Parts: The heads can be easily ordered online and cost between 35 to 140 Euros.
Procedure:
- Locate and Remove the Small Screw:
- Begin by identifying and removing the small screw located at the bottom rear of the handpiece. This screw is often tightly secured, requiring some force to loosen.
- Release the Head:
- Once the screw is removed, the head can be easily pulled out. Be cautious as there are two seals at the top that may need replacement.
- Replace Seals:
- Check for two seals at the top of the head. If worn out, these seals may need replacement. They can be ordered online.
- Loosen the Cap:
- Remove the cap at the back of the handpiece by unscrewing it. This step should be straightforward once the small screw is removed.
- Detach the Shaft:
- To detach the shaft, use a wrench. It may be necessary to grind the wrench to a narrower size for a proper fit. Insert the modified wrench to fix the shaft in place and use another wrench to gently turn and detach the head.
- Remove the Head:
- After detaching the shaft, the head can be pressed out easily. Use a screwdriver to push it out from the back.
- Orient and Reassemble:
- Ensure correct orientation of the components. Align the hole in the shaft and observe the water outlet nozzles at the front. Gently push the head back in, avoiding damage to any protruding elements.
- Final Steps:
- Reattach the cap at the back and tighten the shaft. Ensure a snug fit without excessive force.
Following these steps should allow you to efficiently replace the head of the NSK S-Max M95L, keeping your equipment in optimal working condition.
