The handpieces available in the store can be used to replace high speed turbines, using the tips below and respecting all steps. The process is not hard, but it needs patience and accuracy, so be sure you have all the necessary dental parts, substances (like the lubricants) and respect the instructions. The dental handpiece repair business is well developed, so if you don’t want to do it yourself, you could always get help.
Useful tips for installing the turbine
Make sure you have the entire turbine repair kit. Before replacing the turbine, you should carefully examine the handpiece head for dents. If there is any evidence of such dents, you should return the entire handpiece to the supplier for repairs. It is strongly recommended to avoid installing the replacement turbine into the handpiece because it could result in permanent damage to the turbine. To remove the dents on your own, you may purchase a handpiece turbine cavity reamer – so you’ll have the opportunity to prepare it by yourself.
The worn turbine should be removed by unscrewing the handpiece head with the specialized wrench provided with your handpiece. Any other inappropriate tool will cause damage to your handpiece, so you should use only the appropriate one.
You must inspect the interior of the head for foreign material and debris, and remove all of them if present. Compare worn turbine to new turbine to identify any components that may still be present in your handpiece. All old turbine components including any shims, o-rings, washers or bearing retainers have to be removed, using a scaler or explorer. After that, use a cotton swab and handpiece lubricant to clean handpiece head. Using air from the air/water syringe, blow out handpiece head to remove any cotton fibres.
The process of installation for the high speed turbine
The turbina is provided with two o-rings which will replace the existing ones. One o’ring fits into a groove in the front (bur end) of the handpiece, the other will fit into a groove in the end cap. A burnisher or similar blunt instrument may be helpful when installing the new o-rings to make certain they are fully seated. You must pay special attention to the o-rings to ensure that the old o-rings are completely removed and the new ones are not misaligned, twisted, or otherwise out of place.
Generously lubricate the interior of the handpiece, paying particular attention to the o-rings. Holding handpiece face down, insert turbine fully into handpiece head. The turbine bearings each have a small lip which will rest against the o-rings. Using the appropriate tool, screw end cap down until flush against handpiece head.
The end cap should be tightened securely with a wrench to ensure safe positioning of the turbine. If you are unable to fully seat the end cap, remove and check the end cap for debris/old turbine components.
Before operating the handpiece, make sure you get through these steps
- Install bur securely into turbina: roll it between fingers to make sure bearing turns freely. If you feel any resistance, you should remove turbine and reinstall.
- Install handpiece onto your tubing connector and operate foot control. Make sure the bur is securely fastened to the high speed turbine, before operating the system.
- Lubricate handpiece with a special lubricant, in accordance with daily maintenance instructions.
The process of maintenance
It is strongly recommended that after each use on a patient, the handpiece should be sterilized. Prior to sterilization, clean it with a special handpiece cleaner, in order to flush all debris. This procedure must be repeated as necessary until the only pure cleaner is expelled from the handpiece. It is best to have a dedicated flushing system in the sterilization area for this purpose and to avoid contaminating your dental equipment. The handpiece shouldn’t be left the obernight inside of the sterilizer, and it should be dried outside.
After sterilization, allow handpiece to cool completely and lubricate handpiece with handpiece lubricant, placing a few drops of lubricant into the drive air hole of the handpiece. It is meant to ensure a smooth function of the mechanism and increase the lifespan of the handpiece.
Precautions in the process of replacing a turbine:
- Always keep drive air pressure below 40 P.S.I.
- Do not autoclave above 275° Fahrenheit (135° C). Your sterilizer should be checked monthly to verify correct operating temperature.
- Do not sterilize with dry heat.
- Do not run without a bur or bur blank securely in the turbine.
- Do not run handpiece unless bur is fully seated in the turbine.
- Always remove the bur or bur blank prior to sterilization to prevent damage to the chucking mechanism.
- Never use any type of disinfectant or cold sterilant on the high speed turbine.
- Do not submerge handpiece in running water or an ultrasonic cleaner.
- Always test handpiece before use on a patient.
- Never activate the chuck while a handpiece is running, and do not use a handpiece for retraction.
